Explosive Growth in the New No Dig Garden
After all these years of no dig gardening i am still amazed at the level of growth that can achieved with relatively little effort of setting the garden up.

How to Divide Comfrey to Grow more Plants
Переглядів 4012 дні тому
Comfrey is such a giving plant. It provides bees and other pollinators with an abundance of nectar for most of the growing season and deep tap roots pull up minerals other plants can't reach. That's why comfrey is known as a mineral accumulator. You can use the leaves to make compost tea to feed your plants, a natural liquid fertiliser. Comfrey plants, cuttings and crown divisions are available...

    Everything of mine has taken lots longer than you ... Except my corn, which is huge! I can't offer tips though, except I think we are warmer (and usually drier, but this year... ). My kale has been mullered by the plague of slugs, and now getting white fly (no surprise since it's weak) and I've lost 3 sweet jacks and all but one pickling cucumber. They are even eating potato leaves, Jerusalem artichoke leaves, chilli leaves, basil... The peppers are getting hit too. Not my lettuce though! Not at all. Some cabbage/brassicas, mostly not. I have lots of wild plants around, and I have grass between my beds, which I cut and then maybe the slugs eat the weeds that get cut.. Normally I don't have issues. Less rain and what slugs there prefer the nettles.

      @GardensforLife 3 дні тому

      Nothing worse than excessive slug pressure! I guess i'm lucky enough to not have to worry about them, although there are some practices that can help over time. Here's a little article i wrote some time ago: gardensforlife.ie/how-to-reduce-slug-impact-naturally/

    • @GardensforLife

      Not sure what you can do about white fly, other than attracting more predatory insects to your garden such as the lady birds. Perhaps more flowers and over wintering habit like woodchips on the ground and insect piles (brush piles) around the garden.

Do they response well to replanting, or they'll shock. Do they have tubers now and the tubers will get damaged by transplanting? You have 5 varieties. Which one tastes best and which one has biggest tubers? What variety was the one you harvesting in this clip? Thank you.

    My polytunnel had dried out a lot as well. My solution was to put down an oscillating sprinkler for about an hour and then move it to the other en. That worked well, and I can do something else in the meantime. I have always done this before I planted tomatoes and such. This works especially well with hydrofobic soil. Just repeat it if you feel that the soil is not really watered enough. And I can relate to the kinks in the hose. 😅

    "Garlic Bulbils" are the garlic seeds, you'll need about 3 to 4 seasons to get a good harvest. The good part is that after 3-4 seasons you will get a new variety or more of garlic that you can register if you want. Garlic has the ability to regenerate its DNA. If you grow a hybrid, it will reset to its initial state after the third or fourth seasons grown from bulbils. All in all, it is a very interesting experiment to follow.

    Good Luck fomr NY! It is hard work for sure. Good idea to put more cardboard over the grass as it is a headache in my old garden where some grass came through the compost where I did not have cardboard. In my new garden, this worked well... If time permits.... I put cardboard then any shredded leaves and grass clippings from the fall. then silage tarp over it all for 6 months then 6-8 inches of compost in the spring. then weed fabric over it all. I am liking the weed fabric a lot as my weeding is down 95% and saving me time and aches this year. (Going onto year 2) In the fall I cover it all with the silage tarp to prevent any weeds and preserve the weed fabric to last longer.

    • @GardensforLife
      @GardensforLife 22 дні тому

      Great! How many years is the silage tarp viable for? I'm thinking of buying some UV resistant nursery fabric which is suppose to be 7 years. It's just a shame about the plastic turning into waste at the end. Thanks for your comment! Check out what the garden looks like now. I've been adding onto it this week and next week to double it. ua-cam.com/video/MRZ6Z6a3sWM/v-deo.html

    • @kensearle4892
      @kensearle4892 21 день тому

      @@GardensforLife I bought my silage tarp from a farm (can't remember the name) as I did not want it falling apart in a year or two like other tarps. It is going strong on year 3. For the weed fabric, I bought those online so I can plant straight rows with the lines. That is going on year 2 and looking good. I think keeping the top free from debris and dirt buildup will help it last longer as I had some weeds trying to grow on top where a few millimeters of soil collected by the wind. I am doing No Dig so I figure the waste of a broken-down plow at the end of 10 years and all the gas it uses would be worse than a leftover tarp. Once I get too many holes I'll probably cut it up for smaller garden beds so hoping to get 10+ years from this system.

    • @GardensforLife
      @GardensforLife 21 день тому

      @@kensearle4892 It's all worth experimenting with. The UV stable stuff has be to the longest lasting, but does any of it last for 10+ years. I reckon possibly the best to go is good quality extra thick tarps might be best.
